How it works

Undo in reverse order

For 5x − 7 = 28, add 7 to both sides (5x = 35), then divide by 5 (x = 7). Whatever you do to one side, do to the other.

Variables on both sides

Collect variables on one side: 2(x + 3) = x + 11 → 2x + 6 = x + 11 → x = 5.

Worked examples

  1. Solve 5x − 7 = 28.

    1. Add 7: 5x = 35.
    2. Divide by 5: x = 7.
    3. Check: 5(7) − 7 = 28. ✔
