How it works

Volume of a prism or cylinder

Volume = area of the base × height. A box 5 × 4 × 3 holds 60 cubic units. A cylinder with r = 3 and h = 10 holds πr²h ≈ 3.14 × 9 × 10 = 282.6 cubic units.

Surface area is the wrapper

Add the area of every face. For a rectangular box: SA = 2(lw + lh + wh).

Worked examples

  1. Volume of a cylinder with r = 3 cm and h = 10 cm (use 3.14).

    1. r² = 9.
    2. 3.14 × 9 = 28.26.
    3. 28.26 × 10 = 282.6 cubic cm.
